Sisyrinchium angustifolium – Narrow Leaf Blue Eyed Grass

Although it is called a grass it is actually in the Iris family. Native to the eastern half of the US, ranging from Maine to Florida.  It has beautiful blue flowers with a yellow center that appear in the spring. The foliage is light and green as looks like grass. Spreads some by seed by and is considered a slow spreader. In colder climates it will reach a height of 8 to 14 inches, it has been observed up to 2 feet tall is some warmer areas. Will tolerate moist or dry soils and prefers a half a day of sun or more to thrive.

Sedum ternatum – Woodland Stonecrop

A native stonecrop for the shade, and prefers rich moist soil. Often seen growing on rocks and old logs, it is a good groundcover for your shade garden. Has white flowers that appear in the spring and reaches a height of about 4-6 inches, while the foliage remains close to the ground. It is native to the eastern half of the US from Maine to Georgia and west to Missouri and Arkansas.

Scutellaria ovata – Heart-leaved Skullcap

A wonderful selection that will grow in part shade to shade, it is also very drought tolerant. Has a beautiful blue flower that appears in the summer, and the foliage has a purple appearance in the spring as it first appears. It is native to the eastern half of the US from Pennsylvania to Florida and West to Minnesota and Texas. It does attract butterflies and is deer resistant.

Asclepias syriaca – Common Milkweed

This is the favorite of the Monarch butterfly. It will tolerate drought conditions and full sun, and is also deer resistant. It is native to the eastern US and on into the Midwest. It has sweet scented lavender flowers that appear in the summer and it will reach a height of 2 - 4 feet. Great for mass plantings.

Oenothera fruticosa – Sundrops

This plant is great for a hot dry spot, very drought tolerant. Has a beautiful yellow flower that appear in the late spring to early summer, reaches a height of 18 – 24 inches. Native to the US from Maine to Florida and west to Missouri. It is also deer resistant.

Trillium simile - Sweet White Trillium, Jeweled Wakerobin

 Another woodland beauty. Has white to cream colored flowers that appear in the Spring, the flower is somewhat fragrant. It will grow about 12 -18 inches tall. Must be grow in a shady location with good rich soil, moist but not wet. As with the other Trilliums it will grow into a large clump and spread, but it is a very slow process. In the late summer to early fall it will produce a dark purple fruit. This is a wonderful plant to add to your Trillium collection.
